Cosmetic Surgery Is A Ladder To Success

The American Society of Plastic Surgeons (ASPS), in their recent survey on 756 women has revealed many women believe cosmetic surgery is a ladder to success.

Here are the finding as compiled by The American Society of Plastic Surgeons:
-73 percent of the respondents believe, appearance and youthful looks play a part in getting hired, getting a promotion, or getting new clients.
-80 percent believe, having cosmetic surgery can boost a person's confidence.
-13 percent say, they would consider having a cosmetic medical procedure specifically to boost confident and more competitive in the employment market.
-3 percent of the respondents reveal they've already had a cosmetic procedure to enhance their perceived value in the workplace.

The survey wrap up with a conclusion that, due to the belief that success in the workplace is based on looks, more and more women, particularly working women are opting to cosmetic surgery.

It's no doubt surgical procedures can increase the chances of getting hired, but patients need to be reminded that these are medical procedures and they must take precaution before they want to proceed. For example, if the cosmetic surgery involving scar removal, patients must seek further information before deciding to carry on with the procedures.

  • Seroma-An internal collection of watery body fluids, and is most common in tummy tucks.
  • Necrosis- Tissue death from surgical manipulation, is almost impossible to avoid with any procedure. Smokers are notorious for having necrosis, because smoking reduces the blood supply to skin tissues.
  • Nerve Injury-Any time the skin is cut, small nerves are severed. Major nerve damage results from a "surgical misadventure," but in the hands of an experienced surgeon, the risk is rare. Anyhow in approximately 1 in 1,000 cosmetic face-lift surgeries, damage may be permanent and devastating.
  • Infection-Infections can occur after procedures like liposuction and infection can spread quickly throughout the body and needs to be dealt with immediately.
  • Hypertrophic Scars-Hypertrophic scars are thick, red and unsightly. Although experienced surgeon knows how to minimal the scar, plastic surgery isn't magic, scarring is inevitable in any surgery.
  • Numbness-Although it's rarely permanent, loss of feeling at the site of an operation is fairly common with face lifts and tummy tucks.
  • Bleeding-There is a possibility of bleeding after any kind of surgery. For example, after an eyelid lift, bleeding can threaten a patient's eyesight. Choosing a surgeon with experience and knowledge minimizes this risk.
  • Death-Death rate is rare in cosmetic surgery. But death can happen in the case of high emergency not get immediate attention, the surgeon is not qualified and has no accredited facilities in hand.

Your Own Precautions Can Reduce Cosmetic Surgery Risks

  1. Choose a board certified surgeon. Make sure this Board of Plastic Surgery is recognized by the registered Medical Association.
  2. Make sure the surgeon you chose has privileges to perform surgery at hospital or has credentials from Hospital's Credential Committee.
  3. If your surgeon choose to perform the procedure in the private venue, make sure it has the facilities accredited by the relevant Accreditation Association or Committee. In case of emergency, you can still feel calm because you know they have the qualified people and facilities in hand.

Even with all the precaution methods cosmetic surgery is surgery, all those risks do happen and they can happen to you.
